چکیده
I. A <:>•.::;•. iri son of Sampling Methods for Percent Cover in Tundra Vcgclat ion Line intercept and several random point techniques are compared. Random point techniques arc found preferable to line intercept in providing error estimates and speed of execution. Several lines with random points selected from them is a good compromise between a simple random sample of an area and the speed possible by restricting attention to a line. A technique is given for sequentially drawing a simple random sample from a line. II. A Cluster Analysis of Satell i te (ERTS) Data Data from the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) arc examined fo r a "na tu ra l " c lass ifica t ion . C lass ifica t ion c r i te r ion involves commonness of classified spectral signatures and rarity of intermediates. Such a "natural" classification does seem to exist. The method makes no assumptions about underlying distribution of data. It involves order N calculations where N is the number of recognized d i f fe rent spect ra l s ignatures .

Satellite-derived vegetation index and cover type maps for estimating carbon dioxide flux for arctic tundra regions
The spatial variabi]Lity and co-variability of two different types of remote sensing derivatives that portray vegetation and geomorphic patterns are analyzed in the context of estimating regional-scale CO 2 flux from land surfaces in the arctic tundra. For a study area encompassing the Kuparuk River watershed of the North Slope of Alaska, we compare satellite-derived maps of the normalized diff...
متن کاملLong-term recovery patterns of arctic tundra after winter seismic exploration.
In response to the increasing global demand for energy, oil exploration and development are expanding into frontier areas of the Arctic, where slow-growing tundra vegetation and the underlying permafrost soils are very sensitive to disturbance. The creation of vehicle trails on the tundra from seismic exploration for oil has accelerated in the past decade, and the cumulative impact represents a...
متن کاملAssessment of Fire Effects on Surface Cover Changes and Forage Production (Case Study: Delfan County, Lorestan Province, Iran)
The aim of this study was to assess the regional effects of fire on the surface cover and forage production of mountainous rangelands of Delfan County, Lorestan province, Iran. The fire took placed in June 2007 with significant effects on the vegetation characteristics in the study area. Four fire affected sites were selected for sampling and a close area without fire was considered as control....
متن کاملRepresentation of tundra vegetation by pollen in lake sediments of northern Alaska
Aim To understand better the representation of arctic tundra vegetation by pollen data, we analysed pollen assemblages and pollen accumulation rates (PARs) in the surface sediments of lakes. Location Modern sediment samples were collected from seventy-eight lakes located in the Arctic Foothills and Arctic Coastal Plain regions of northern Alaska. Methods For seventy of the lakes, we analysed po...
متن کاملTree and Tundra Cover Anomalies in the Subarctic Forest-Tundra of Northwestern Canada
Factors that may account for subarctic vegetation patterns that are not reconcilable with synoptic climate were sought by reference to data on local climate, soils, parent materials, vegetation, and topography. Where the forest-tundra lies climatically northward, the vegetation transition zone is relatively narrow, and the soils are nutrient-rich, fine-textured loamy Cryosols derived from sedim...
